Sasan Gir Safari Guide: Everything You Need to Know Before You Go
Travel Guide 17 May 2026

Sasan Gir National Park is the last natural habitat of the Asiatic lion and one of the most thrilling wildlife destinations in all of India. Located in the Junagadh district of Gujarat, Gir forest spreads over 1412 square kilometers of protected wilderness and is home to over 600 Asiatic lions along with leopards, hyenas, crocodiles and more than 300 species of birds.

Safari Zones in Gir

Gir National Park is divided into several safari zones including Sasan, Sinh Sadan, Devalia and Kankai. The Devalia Safari Park, also known as the Gir Interpretation Zone, offers a guaranteed lion sighting experience within a fenced enclosure and is perfect for families and first time visitors. The main forest safari covers deeper zones where wildlife sightings are more natural and exciting.

How to Book a Gir Safari

Gir safari permits must be booked in advance through the official Gujarat forest department website. Each safari jeep accommodates 6 persons along with a mandatory trained wildlife guide. Morning safaris start at 6 AM and evening safaris start at 3 PM. It is highly recommended to book your safari permit at least 2 to 3 weeks in advance especially during peak season from December to March.

Best Time to Visit Sasan Gir

The best time to visit Sasan Gir is between October and March when the weather is pleasant and wildlife sightings are most frequent. The park remains closed from mid June to mid October due to the monsoon season. Winter months of December and January offer the best chance of spotting lions as the vegetation is less dense and animals come out in the open more frequently.

Wildlife at Gir

Apart from the majestic Asiatic lions, Gir National Park is home to a rich variety of wildlife including Indian leopards, striped hyenas, golden jackals, sambar deer, chital, nilgai and the rare Indian star tortoise. The park is also a paradise for birdwatchers with species like the crested serpent eagle, Indian roller, painted stork and the endangered lesser florican frequently spotted here.
